🧮 Calculate Return on Investment

What is an ROI Calculator?

It measures how much an investment gained or lost relative to what you put in. Enter the initial outlay and the final value and it returns the net profit and the total return as a percentage; supply a holding period and it also gives the annualized (CAGR) return so results over different time spans can be compared fairly.

ROI is one of the most common yardsticks for reviewing an investment, but it's a gross, backward-looking figure that ignores fees, taxes, and inflation. Everything here is pure arithmetic on the numbers you enter — offered for learning, not as advice to buy, sell, or hold anything.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How is ROI calculated?

Return on investment is the net profit divided by the initial investment, shown as a percentage. Net profit is simply the final value minus what you put in. So turning $1,000 into $1,500 is a $500 profit and a 50% ROI. It's a plain measure of return on the figures you enter.

What is annualized ROI (CAGR)?

When you enter a holding period, the tool computes the compound annual growth rate — the steady yearly rate that would take the initial value to the final value over that many years, using (final ÷ initial)^(1 ÷ years) − 1. It makes returns over different time spans comparable on a per-year basis.

Does ROI account for fees, taxes, or inflation?

No. This is a gross, arithmetic measure on the two values you supply. Real net returns are reduced by trading costs, taxes, and inflation, so treat the percentage as a starting point rather than a take-home figure.
